Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed around 5.6 million passengers in June 2023, an increase of 11.3 percent compared to the same month last year. For the first time since the pandemic, Germany’s largest airport was handling more than 200,000 passengers a day.
In June, this number was exceeded on three days, the summer travel wave is still to come. For comparison: In the whole of 2022, the passenger volume in FRA only surpassed the 180,000 mark five times per day. However, passenger volume in June 2023 was still 15.6 percent below the pre-crisis level of June 2019
From January to June 2023, a total of around 26.9 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport – an increase of 29.1 percent compared to the same period last year. Compared to the same period in 2019, the number of passengers in FRA was still down by 20.1 percent.
Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG, said: « We are pleased about the ongoing recovery in passenger demand, but we are also aware of the challenges that arise from this development. » We are working intensively with all process partners to prepare for the upcoming summer travel season. The generally orderly operation in the first half of the year gives us cause for cautious optimism. The numerous measures that we have taken are already having an effect. Across the Group, our predominantly leisure-oriented airports are recovering faster and faster. While our Greek airports have already exceeded the crisis level, we expect that other Group airports will also almost reach the pre-crisis passenger volume in the course of the year ».
Freight volumes in Frankfurt declined in June 2023, reflecting the general economic slowdown. At 160,047 tons, the volume of freight (consisting of air freight and air mail) in Frankfurt was 4.6 percent below the level of June 2022. Flight movements increased by 8.4 percent compared to the previous year to 38,885 take-offs and landings. The cumulative maximum take-off weight (MTOW) also rose by 8.4 percent to around 2.4 million tons compared to the previous year.
The airports in Fraport’s international portfolio also continued to record continuous traffic growth. Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia recorded 128,534 passengers in June 2023, 25.5 percent more than in the previous year. The combined traffic of Brazil’s Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) airports rose to 1.1 million passengers, up 12.6 percent. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru recorded around 1.7 million passengers, an increase of 13.8 percent. Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports recorded a 13.7 percent increase in total traffic to around 5.0 million passengers in the month under review. On the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, traffic at the Twin Star Airports Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) increased by 30.5 percent to 550,641 passengers compared to the same month last year. Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera recorded 4.5 million passengers, an increase of 15.9 percent.
